BUTLER - Diesel fuel spill sparks cleanup

BUTLER - Roughly 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled behind Lowe’s on Sunday, June 15 when a tractor-trailer’s gas tank ruptured, police said.

Police responded to investigate around 9 a.m. and a Morris County Hazmat unit spent more than eight hours working to contain the spill in an area off Route 23, Capt. Jay Dean said.

According to police, Michael Paige, 56, of Bayville, was backing up a 2004 Volvo tractor, owned by Cardinal Logistics Corp. out of South Holland, Ill., to hook up to a trailer and struck a concrete wall.

The collision ruptured the fuel tank, spilling about 100 gallons of diesel fuel onto a lot near the loading area behind the hardware store. The spill did not interfere with business and the store remained open the entire day, police said.

Butler and Towaco fire departments responded, as did the Morris County Department of Law and Safety Hazmat Unit.

The Hazmat unit used a material to speed dry the liquid and absorbent booms to contain the spill and also called in a private contractor to help, Capt. Dean said. The responders worked diligently to keep the spill under control as they wanted to avoid seepage into a nearby drainage area.

Patrolmen Bryan Gordon and George Beyloune investigated for borough police.
