BUTLER - Car seat inspections offered by police
(by April Plantamura - Staff Writer - June 11, 2008)
BUTLER - Safe Kids Northern NJ will offer car seat inspections on Thursday, June 19 at the Butler Police Department, located at 10 High St.
Nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will perform inspections and train parents and caregivers to install and adjust their car seats properly from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Safe Kids Northern NJ is one of more than 300 coalitions across the country that provides these types of services as part of the Safe Kids Buckle Up Program. Safe Kids Buckle Up has inspected more than 600,000 car seats since 1996, hosted more than 15,000 events and provided hands-on training to over 9 million parents.
“Under New Jersey law, all children under 8 years old and 80 pounds must be restrained in an appropriate car seat, whether in a family car, traveling with friends or relatives, or in a rental car or taxi,” said K.J. Feury, coordinator for Safe Kids Northern NJ.
Feury said that parents should view these car seat inspections as “a private lesson in the correct use of your car seat.”
The inspections usually take between 20 and 30 minutes. Parents should bring their child with them to the inspections, as well as the owner’s manual for their vehicle and a car seat. For further information, call the Butler Police Department’s Traffic Bureau at 973-838-4100.
