BUTLER - Police will conduct DWI checkpoints this summer

(by April Plantamura - Staff Writer - June 08, 2008)

BUTLER - In an effort to combat drinking and driving in the borough during the 2008 summer season, the Police Department will be conducting several periodic Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) roadside checkpoints throughout the community.

The Butler Police Department will be in compliance with NJ Attorney General guidelines in establishing roadside checkpoints. There will be a participation of Police Department supervisory staff in the planning and approval of the checkpoint, which shall include directing checkpoint officers to stop cars at predetermined intervals.

The Police Department will determine the time, place and duration of the checkpoint based on data showing areas known for high incidents of accidents, drunken driving and other traffic violations. Police will also consider traffic volumes and motorist/pedestrian safety in planning checkpoint sites and times.

The plan will include the number of officers assigned to the checkpoint to ensure motorist delays are held to a minimum and that the checkpoint is sufficiently staffed.

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office will be provided a copy of the plan and detectives from the Prosecutor’s Office will be on scene, monitoring and participating in the checkpoints.

During the checkpoint, warning signs will be posted, advising motorists of the purpose of the checkpoint and that officers could stop them.

Upon completion of the checkpoint, officers who participated will furnish details so that the results can be determined.

The Butler Police Department is advising motorists to please refrain from drinking and driving since the all violations of this law will be enforced aggressively.

These DWI roadside checkpoints are funded by the Butler Police Department’s budget and the Drunk Driving Enforcement Funds that come from fines paid by those convicted of drunken driving in the municipality.
