POMPTON LAKES - School referendum on agenda
POMPTON LAKES - The Board of Education will host a special meeting 7 p.m. Dec. 4 in the Pompton Lakes High School Media Center to discuss a referendum slated for 2-9 p.m. on Jan. 27.
This referendum will ask the community if the district could replace the high school’s boiler, which was installed at the time of the building’s construction in the 1930s.
School Business Administrator Nancy Ciavaglia said monthly maintenance costs have been $60,000 a year just to keep the system at the high school running. Also from May 2007 to May 2008, the district spent $96,000 on fuel expenses at the high school alone.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Terrance Brennan said when the furnace is in operation, someone has to come in to fix it monthly, which is why it is so costly.
Those who attend this meeting will get to tour to boiler room, find out about the availability of state funds and energy savings grants, and what the cost will be for taxpayers.
