POMPTON LAKES - Volunteers host dinner for DV victims

POMPTON LAKES - The holidays are special when the true meaning of giving is shared with others.
On Monday, Nov. 17, the Pompton Lakes Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) hosted a special Thanksgiving Feast at the Carnevale Center for victims of domestic violence and their families from all over Passaic County.
This feast was the first of its kind and it was coordinated along with the Passaic County Women’s Center.
“The event was splendid. We got to bring everybody out of the environment they were in,” said Borough Police Sgt. Steve Recca.
For a few hours, the victims and their families were able to relax and enjoy a holiday feast with a turkey and all of the trimmings.
“The clients from local shelters who attended were very grateful and overwhelmed by the generosity of this community. It was very heartwarming to see smiles on the faces of so many. Before leaving, the children and their mothers received a small gift bag. Nothing from the event was spared; even the leftover food was packaged and sent to a local homeless shelter,” said Borough Clerk and DVRT volunteer Liz Brandsness.
“The success of this event could not have been possible without the generosity and support of our local businesses. We can only ask that the local community will in turn support the business that made this day memorable,” said Recca.
The businesses and groups that generously contributed to the success of this feast included Thatcher McGhee’s Irish Pub and Eatery, Riddles Club & Restaurant, King and Sons Pizzeria, A&P and The Little Deli. Tony’s Pizzeria, Valiani Italian Deli & Bakery, Pompton Lakes Florist, Starbucks Coffee, R&M Hardware, Northeast Janitorial Supply, Edible Arrangements, Curious Cookie and the PBA 161.
The Pompton Lakes DVRT is a dedicated group of people who assist when the Police Department responds to domestic violence calls. The team, working with the police, uses a proactive approach to reach out to the community during events to educate and bring awareness of domestic violence.
