WANAQUE - US Aluminum site has to switch pipes

(by Teresa Edmond - Staff Writer - December 02, 2008)

WANAQUE - The borough plans to have Fourth Avenue businesses’ water lines taken off an old water main and put onto a redistribution pipe starting the week of Nov. 30.

At its Nov. 10 meeting, the Borough Council awarded a contract to Mike Fitzpatrick Equipment Company Inc. of Butler. The project is quoted at $25,600.

The contractor was hired to switch the water lines serving Fourth Avenue businesses from an old water pipe to an alternative one. This work should last two to three days, according to Borough Administrator Tom Carroll.

The Haskell section’s water pipes date back to the turn of the 20th century, when DuPont was located on the modern-day US Aluminum site. One pipe runs through this site and comes out onto the Fourth Avenue sidewalk that serves all the businesses on that street.

“That way, we can abandon that old DuPont pipe, which is probably leaking, and give a stable water line to the businesses along Fourth Avenue,” Carroll said.

According to Carroll, the borough has no maps of the secondary water pipes.

Somerville-based environmental consultant J.M. Sorge has been investigating whether traces of contamination exist on the US Aluminum site because the borough is eyeing the property for redevelopment. The five-acre tract is worth about $1.8 million, borough officials said.
