WANAQUE - The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and borough police are investigating a motor vehicle accident Sunday where a Chevy struck a 50-year-old local man on Ringwood Avenue causing injuries.
Capt. Ken Fackina reported that Harry Rainey Jr. of this borough was crossing an unlit area of the roadway, wearing dark clothing, and not in a crosswalk when he was hit by a 2001 Chevy Lumina just north of Union Avenue.
Shortly after 7 p.m., patrol units were dispatched to the scene with Patrolman Brian Bellifemine, Patrolman Ed Schroeder and Sgt. Angelo Calabro the first to arrive. Wanaque First Aid was dispatched as well as Chilton Memorial Hospital paramedics to tend to the pedestrian, who had suffered a skull fracture and compound fracture of the right leg, police said. He was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital, an area trauma center.
Due to the seriousness of his injuries, the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Accident Investigation Unit was also dispatched and conducted the investigation in conjunction with Wanaque Police. No charges were filed at the scene but the investigation is ongoing.
Through the investigation, which Detective Tad Skawinski assisted with, authorities determined that Thomas Norton Jr., age 71, of Haskell was the driver of the Chevy. Initial investigation indicates that Norton was northbound on Ringwood Avenue when he struck the pedestrian. On Tuesday, a hospital official said Rainey was listed in good condition.
On the date of the accident, traffic was detoured on Ringwood Avenue until roughly 10 p.m. when the entire roadway was reopened.
