BUTLER

Drug possession alleged

A Pompton Lakes man was charged with drunken driving and drug possession following an Oct. 17 motor vehicle stop, Capt. Jay Dean said.

While on radar detail on Route 23 around 11 p.m., police stopped a vehicle for alleged speeding. While speaking with the driver, identified as Gregory Mosley, 19, of Pompton Lakes, police came to suspect he was intoxicated. Also, police saw suspected marijuana in the vehicle.

Mosley was charged with driving under the influence, speeding, operating a vehicle in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. He was taken to headquarters, processed and then released from custody.

Patrolman Scott Sinopoli was the arresting officer and Sgt. Michael Moeller and Kinnelon Patrolman Keith Kelly assisted.

Broken lights lead to charges

Alleged malfunctioning rear lights brought to police officers' attention a Michigan man who was suspected of driving drunk, Capt. Jay Dean said.

Police spotted the driver on Main Street on Oct. 18 at 3:22 a.m., and after pulling the vehicle over, came to suspect that the driver was intoxicated, so they had him perform field sobriety tests.

Alfredo Vera, 28, of Romeo, Mich., was charged with driving under the influence, refusal to submit to a breath-alcohol test and failure to maintain lamps. He was transported to headquarters, processed and released from custody.

Patrolman Scott Sinopoli was the arresting officer and Sgt. Michael Moeller assisted.

Reckless driving reported

Police were alerted to "a vehicle being operated recklessly" by a possibly intoxicated driver on Route 23 South on Oct. 21 at 9:34 a.m., Capt. Jay Dean said.

Police saw the vehicle in question allegedly failing to stay within its lane and tailgating another vehicle. After stopping the vehicle, police came to suspect that the driver was intoxicated, so they had him perform field sobriety tests.

Frances Wright, 42, of Vernon, was charged with driving under the influence and reckless driving. Wright was transported to headquarters where he was processed and then released from custody.

Patrolman Scott Sinopoli was the investigating officer, with assistance from Patrolman Richard Stoll of Butler Police and Sgt. Chris Burns and Patrolman Christopher Mucci, both of Kinnelon Police.

WEST MILFORD

Crash prompts charge

A Nutley woman was charged with drunken driving following a motor vehicle accident on Germantown Road on Oct. 19, police said.

While Officer Robert Tomaschek was on routine patrol, he was alerted to a possible accident or disabled car on Route 23 near Germantown Road. When he arrived there, he found a car on the right side of the roadway blocking the lane of travel with the emergency flashers on, and a woman walking along the road, police said.

Tomaschek spoke to driver Suzanne Danna, 26, and smelled alcohol on her breath. She was eventually charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

The officer noted that there was heavy front-end damage and a blown tire on the 2006 Hyundai. Police later determined that the accident had occurred on Route 23 South in Kinnelon and that the driver had crashed into a guide rail.

Resident is charged

Police report that an expired registration led to the discovery of an alleged drunken driver on Lakeshore Drive Oct. 24.

When Officer James McDaniel stopped a vehicle that a motor vehicle check revealed had an expired registration, he found came to suspect that the driver was intoxicated, the blotter states.

According to police, township resident Amie Lapointe, 24, was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Erratic driving reported

A caller tipped police off to an alleged drunken driver on Ridge Road Oct. 19. Police received an anonymous report of an erratic driver, and Officer Dennis O’Donnell saw the vehicle in question pull into a parking lot.

While speaking with the driver, Judeth Roos, 46, of Hewitt, he could smell alcohol on her breath. Roos was eventually charged with driving while intoxicated and refusing to submit to breath-alcohol tests, police said.

School vandalized

Police reported vandalism done to Westbrook School some time between Oct. 17 and 20. Officer William Pittelko responded to investigate the reported criminal mischief and found that black spray paint on the school.

Vehicle rolls over

A Randolph man was charged with driving while intoxicated after being involved in a motor vehicle accident in which his vehicle rolled over, police reported.

On Oct. 20, Officers Gary Yarnall, Stephen Braikovich and William Pittelko responded to the accident scene on Route 23 north in the area of Germantown Road.

The officers found that two Kinnelon officers, Sgt. Chris Burns and Officer Rick McDonnell, were already on scene. A car was off the left side of the highway and had run into some trees.

The driver, identified as Lawrence Stanchina, 54, was given sobriety tests and as a result, received summonses for driving while intoxicated. He was also issued summonses for failure to observe a traffic device, failure to drive within a single lane, failure to have liability insurance and failure to exhibit documents.

According to police, Stanchina refused medical attention at the scene.

Bear hits vehicle

A bear hit a township woman’s car while she was driving south on Union Valley Road on Oct. 21, police said. Jennifer Garey, 27, said that the bear ran out in front of her vehicle and hit the vehicle then ran into the woods.

Responding to the scene, Officer William Pittelko observed that the vehicle was damaged on the left front bumper. No injuries were reported.

Theft from vehicle

A laptop computer was taken from a vehicle parked on a Moore Road driveway Oct. 21, police reported. Officer Amy Hancock responded and found that a HP Compaq laptop was taken from an unlocked 2008 Ford Edge.

Cracked windshield is tip

A Stockholm man was charged with driving while intoxicated after being stopped for a cracked windshield on Route 23 North Oct. 22, police have reported.

While Officer Christopher O’Connor was on patrol, he noticed a vehicle pull back onto the road after being parked on the right shoulder.

As O’Connor caught up with it, he noticed that the windshield had a large crack in it. The officer stopped the vehicle and came to suspect that the driver was intoxicated.

Police accused Kurt Dempe, 45, of Stockholm, of driving while intoxicated and motor vehicle equipment violations.

Home burglarized

A home on Point Breeze Drive was broken into and multiple electronics were stolen, police reported. Officer James McDaniel responded to the home Oct. 22 and that someone forced their way in and stole a Dell Inspiron laptop and Olympus digital camera. Police are investigating.

Several violations

A motor vehicle accident on Germantown Road Oct. 24 resulted in several charges against a township man, police have reported.

The vehicle involved in the accident was traveling east at a high rate of speed when it crossed over the center line and ran off the roadway to the left. The driver then regained control and crossed back over the center line before hitting a guard rail and speed limit sign.

The motorist, identified as James Aylward, 45, was charged with driving while intoxicated, careless driving, failure to keep right and failure to exhibit documents.

Officer Anthony Frassa responded to investigate for township police. No injuries were reported.

Driver, passenger injured

A Wallington woman was injured in a single-car accident on Westbrook Road Oct. 25, police said.

Officer Anthony Frassa said that the vehicle was going around a curve while traveling south on Westbrook Road at a fast speed. The vehicle crossed over the center line and struck the bridge rail, causing the left side of the vehicle to be catapulted upward. The left front and left rear tires of the vehicle rode on top of the bridge rail for about 8 feet before coming back down off the bridge rail. The vehicle then crossed back over the center line, striking a large curb before coming to rest.

Driver Amanda Batista, 18, of Wallington, and a passenger were taken to Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains, for treatment of injuries.

Impact with tree

A township man was charged with drunken driving after striking a tree in the front yard of a Mountain Circle home Oct. 25, police said. Sgt. Keith Ricciardi responded and found that George English, 40, had hit the tree at 173 Mountain Circle. According to police, English refused medical attention.

Window broken

Police are investigating what appears to be a rock thrown through a window at Lincoln Avenue on Oct. 27. Officer Suzanne Novakowski responded to collect the initial report.

PAL vandalized

Police have reported criminal mischief at the Police Athletic League (PAL) building on Oct. 30 when Officer Bruce Lederman found that red and black spray paint was used to mark the rear of the structure with graffiti.

Tools stolen

Multiple tools together valued at nearly $800 were stolen from a Cherry Ridge Road home some time between Oct. 27 and 30. Officer Shannon Sommerville said that a Stihl chainsaw valued at $231 and a backpack blower valued at $550 had been taken.

All persons charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
