NORTH JERSEY - While local authorities regularly enforce motor vehicle laws and encourage motorists to drive safely, police will be stepping up enforcement on Friday, Oct. 10 in an effort to make the day fatality-free.
“Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day” was established to focus national attention on reducing traffic fatalities throughout the United States.
More than 41,000 individuals across the country were killed in traffic crashes last year, and 724 individuals lost their lives on New Jersey roadways in 2007.
To help reduce these tragedies, drivers, passengers, pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclists are asked to use extra care and caution on Oct. 10 to prevent crashes from occurring and to make this one day stand out for zero fatalities.
Law enforcement agencies, like West Milford Township, participating in the Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day offer the following advice:
Buckle up
Obey posted speed limits
Avoid aggressive driving behaviors
Never drink and drive
Wear proper safety gear when riding a motorcycle or bicycle
Focus solely on driving and avoid distractions
