WANAQUE - Lakeland sets 2008-09 goals

(by Teresa Edmond - Staff Writer - September 10, 2008)

WANAQUE- The Lakeland Regional High School (LRHS) Board of Education is setting its goals to improve curriculum and test scores for the 2008-09 school year while also reviewing its own school board policies.

Suggested goals would focus on strategies to improve SAT scores and find financial help to deal with costly school transportation fuels. Another goal the board wishes to tackle is to successfully complete contract negotiations with administrators.

The high school is also looking to collaborate with Wanaque’s elementary grades so that together they offer a language arts curriculum that builds upon each prior grade’s instruction. Both districts would streamline a language arts curriculum to better trail a student’s language arts progress.

“It makes better continuity not only for the students but also for the teachers and the school district as well,” Lakeland Superintendent Albert Guazzo said.

Out of the school board’s seven goals for itself and the high school, getting grants and reimbursements for transportation fuel is “a stretch goal,” Guazzo said.

At its Aug. 26 meeting, the LRHS school board worked on its goals with Cathy Sousa of the NJ School Boards Association (NJSBA). It’s a yearly standard for school boards to craft the district’s goals with the NJSBA.

Sousa said she would send the Board of Education a letter listing the board’s goals no later than Sept. 12. From there, the school board would review the suggested goals and prioritize them. However, the school board’s goals already listed at the Aug. 26 meeting would be the official goals, according to Guazzo.

Besides setting up its goals for this coming school year, the school board also discussed ways to better reach out to the school community, a mission it has already been working hard to accomplish.

“I think with the increase in attendance in school, Al (Guazzo) has done a remarkable job with the eighth grade open houses … and back to school night. We have made tremendous strides in reaching out to the community. It is an ongoing challenge,” said Bryan Ward of Ringwood, school board member.
