LINCOLN PARK - Sidewalk bond is delayed
(by Sid Johnston - Staff Writer - September 03, 2008)
LINCOLN PARK - Borough Council members held off on adopting a bond ordinance for improving the downtown, but still spent time listening to opinions on the project.
On Aug. 18, the council postponed adopting the ordinance until Sept.15. The ordinance would appropriate $568,757 to repair and install sidewalks and curbs along Main Street between Comly Road and Route 202.
Of the total cost, $318,757 would eventually be assessed against the owners of the property slated for improvement, while the borough would provide $250,000 from the 2008 municipal budget.
Council President Raymond Kerwin explained it was delayed because the council was “unhappy with wording in the ordinance.” The council pushed back the ordinance's introduction from the June 16 meeting to the July 21 meeting for similar reasons.
Some property owners in downtown Lincoln Park voiced their feelings on the project's cost.
“We don’t have a problem with what we have. We feel the sidewalk is a public facility,” George Shanoian, a representative of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, said.
“The cost of repairing the sidewalk is unfair, with quotes ranging from $3,000 to $6,000,” Bob Mustow, a Main Street business owner, said.
“The trees have destroyed a good portion of the sidewalk and are part of the problem,” said borough resident Bruce Smith.
Mayor David Runfeldt explained, “The borough is putting $250,000 into the project, and allowing things to deteriorate is a detriment to people moving into the community.”
