BUTLER - Hope is for paving to start before winter

BUTLER - The borough is attempting to head off road surface issues before they arise with a massively increased paving program throughout the community.
At the Aug. 19 meeting of the Borough Council, Councilman Robert Fox said that the Department of Public Works has prioritized the maintenance of the roads in order to have them fit for the winter.
“We’re trying to pave them before they really disintegrate,” said Fox.
“We drove around, and we found the worst streets we could. Dean Avenue is high on the list, as well as Scott Street and the beginning of Elm Street,” he said.
Bonds will likely pay for the improvements.
“Once we estimate it, we’ll bond it. That’s the best way to do it — this way, we’re not taking out money and paying right now for roads that are going to last 15 or 20 years,” said Fox.
Fox said the projects are intended to start before the winter in order to cover as much ground as possible before snow plows take their toll.
Fox also said that Decker Road is now complete.
“We did striping that didn’t turn out so well, so we redid it. A couple of manhole covers were also askew, but we milled around them so drivers don’t take such a rough hit. We’re also finished up on West Belleview (Avenue), and that one looks beautiful. There’s no complaints there.”
Fox said that over the last three to four weeks, the borough has used nearly 12 tons of asphalt patching potholes all over the town.
“We’re trying to get them before we start getting the complaints,” he said.
